Almost every air-system failure that strands a truck started as water somebody could have drained months earlier. The air dryer is the least glamorous component on a Class 8 tractor and one of the few whose neglect takes out multiple systems at once — brakes, suspension, emissions, and drivetrain all depend on clean, dry air. For a dispatcher, this is not a shop problem. It is a scheduling problem, because the difference between a planned cartridge change and an unplanned road call is the difference between a truck that runs your lane and a truck that does not run at all.
What the Air Dryer Actually Protects
The compressor pulls in ambient air, which carries water vapor and a small amount of compressor oil. The air dryer’s job is to strip both out before that air reaches the reservoirs and everything downstream of them. When the cartridge is saturated or the dryer is not purging correctly, water and oil pass through.
The consequences are not limited to brakes. As Work Truck notes, oil contamination can lead to the failure of any system that relies on clean air for proper operation — air brake, engine, emission, and drivetrain systems included. Contaminated air will also chew through valve seals and air bags, which turns a cheap maintenance item into a suspension repair.
And the failure mode that actually shuts a truck down is temperature. Heavy Duty Trucking has made the point plainly: moisture in a brake system can freeze, preventing air from passing through so the system will not build pressure at all. That is a truck that does not move, usually at 5 a.m., usually in a lot with no service nearby.
The Intervals to Put on the Schedule
Bendix publishes service guidance that scales with how hard the air system works, and the vocation matters more than the odometer. The numbers worth knowing:
- Check for moisture every 25,000 miles, three months, or 900 hours under standard air-usage conditions. Bendix recommends draining the reservoir and looking for water at that interval — this is the diagnostic, not the repair.
- Standard-usage cartridge replacement runs to 24 months or 200,000 miles for a PuraGuard-type cartridge, per Bendix’s updated interval recommendations.
- Linehaul falls in a band, not on a number. Coalescing cartridges typically last one to two years in linehaul service; non-coalescing cartridges two to three years. Long, steady highway miles are the easiest duty cycle an air dryer sees.
- Severe service is annual. For high-air-usage vocations, the cartridge should be replaced every year or 100,000 miles. If your carrier runs heavy stop-and-go, frequent air-suspension dumps, or a lot of door and lift work, treat them as severe service regardless of what the mileage says.
- Shorten the interval by climate. Humid Gulf and Southeast lanes load a dryer harder than dry Western runs. A truck that runs Houston to Atlanta year-round should be checked on the aggressive end of the range.
- Consult the vehicle-specific table before you commit a date. Bendix publishes a service-interval chart by air usage, vocation, and axle configuration; the right interval for a given truck comes off that table, not off a rule of thumb.
The Three-Minute Check Any Driver Can Run
You do not need a technician to find out whether the dryer is doing its job. Have the driver drain the wet tank at a fuel stop and watch what comes out. Clean air with a light mist is normal. A steady spray of water means the dryer is not removing moisture. A milky or oily discharge means compressor oil is passing through, which is a bigger conversation with the shop about the compressor itself, not just the cartridge.
Two more signals worth training drivers to report: a dryer that never audibly purges after the governor cuts out, and a dryer that purges constantly. Both point to a failed purge valve, and both mean the cartridge is not being regenerated between cycles.
At a minimum, drain the air reservoir and check for moisture in the system every 25,000 miles, three months, or 900 hours under standard air usage conditions.

How a Dispatcher Schedules This Without Losing a Day
A cartridge change is a short shop visit. The reason it gets deferred is that nobody wants to give up a revenue day for a part that has not failed yet. The fix is to stop treating it as its own appointment.
Bundle the air dryer into a service visit the truck is already making — the next PM, the next tire rotation, the annual inspection. Then schedule that visit into a deliberately soft booking day: a Monday after a weekend reset, or a day when the origin market is weak and the truck was going to sit anyway. You are converting downtime you were already eating into maintenance you were going to owe.
Track it in your own records, not just the carrier’s. Note the date and mileage of the last cartridge change alongside the annual inspection date in your carrier file. Moisture findings on a driver’s daily inspection report also belong in the DVIR record under 49 CFR 396.11, and a documented defect that was reported and repaired is a much better story in an audit than a defect that was noticed and ignored. Air-brake defects also remain one of the most cited categories in CVSA roadside inspections, and moisture is upstream of a lot of them.
What to Do Next
Ask each of your carriers one question this week: when was the air dryer cartridge last replaced, and at what mileage? If nobody knows, the answer is effectively “too long ago,” and the truck should get a moisture check at the next fuel stop.
Then set the interval in writing based on how that truck actually runs — standard linehaul on the two-year band, heavy air usage or humid lanes on the annual band — and put the next service date on the same calendar you use for insurance renewals and annual inspections. Cold weather is four months out. The trucks that get caught by a frozen air line in December are the ones nobody checked in August.
