7 Tire Checks That Keep a $600 Steer Tire From Turning Into a $1,200 Road Call

More than 30% of commercial tire failures trace back to heat and improper inflation — both of which are catchable in a five-minute walk-around. Here are seven tire checks, the real 2026 cost numbers behind each one, and how a dispatcher builds them into the week.

A tire that fails at highway speed does not cost you a tire — it costs you the tire, the road call, the driver’s afternoon, and usually the load. That is the math dispatchers miss. A replacement steer runs a few hundred dollars; the event around it runs four figures. The good news is that the two root causes behind most tire failures are things a driver can find in five minutes with a gauge and a flashlight. Here are the seven checks worth building into the week.

What a Tire Failure Actually Costs

Start with the price of doing nothing. New commercial tires in 2026 run roughly $400 to $800 for a steer, $350 to $650 for a drive and $300 to $500 for a trailer position, with retreads landing in the $150 to $400 range. Those are manageable numbers when you plan them.

Unplanned is a different animal. Industry service data puts an average roadside call at $500 to $600 before parts; add a replacement tire and the driver’s lost time and a single roadside tire event commonly lands around $1,200. A true blowout at speed — with the debris damage, the missed appointment and the potential liability — is regularly quoted in the $2,500 to $10,000 range. Against an industry average operating cost above $2.26 per mile, one blowout can erase the margin on several hundred miles of freight.

The Seven Checks

  • 1. Gauge every position — cold, with a real gauge. Thumping tires with a bar tells you almost nothing below about 40 psi. More than 30% of commercial tire failures trace to heat buildup and improper inflation, and underinflation is the direct cause of the heat. Check cold, before the first move of the day, against the pressure on the sidewall and the load the truck is actually carrying.
  • 2. Match duals within 5 psi. Mismatched duals force the higher tire to carry more than its share and scrub the lower one. It is the single most common cause of a “good” tire failing early.
  • 3. Read the wear pattern, not just the depth. Feathering points at alignment. Center wear means overinflation. Shoulder wear on both edges means underinflation. Cupping on a steer points at a worn shock or unbalanced wheel. The pattern tells you what to fix so the next tire does not die the same way.
  • 4. Measure tread depth at three points across the face. Federal minimums under 49 CFR 393.75 are 4/32 inch on steer axles and 2/32 elsewhere, measured in a major tread groove. Plan the replacement before the truck is at the line, not at it — an inspector finding a bald steer is an out-of-service order.
  • 5. Look for sidewall damage, exposed cord and bulges. A bulge means the casing is already compromised. That tire is not a “watch it” item; it is a park-it item.
  • 6. Check valve stems, caps and TPMS sensors. A missing cap on an inside dual is how a slow leak becomes a Tuesday-afternoon road call. Caps cost cents.

Inflation Is a Fuel Line Item, Not Just a Safety One

This is the part that turns a safety chore into a business case. Properly inflated tires cut rolling resistance and improve fuel economy on the order of 1% to 3%. Analysts who model it out put the recovery of even 1% at roughly 154 gallons per truck per year. At the diesel prices carriers are paying this month — near $5.47 a gallon nationally — that single percent is worth well over $800 a year on one truck, before you count the road calls you did not take.

Michelin’s commercial tire pressure guidance makes the same point from the engineering side: pressure should be set for the actual load on the axle, and consistency across checks matters as much as the number itself. If your carrier is running a tire inflation system or TPMS, your job is to make sure someone is actually reading the alerts rather than dismissing them.

How a Dispatcher Builds This Into the Week

You are not turning wrenches. You are scheduling and tracking. Three moves. First, put a gauge-every-position check on one fixed day a week — most operations pick the reset day — and log the readings somewhere you can look back at. A tire that drops 4 psi every week has a leak, and you only see that in a log. Second, treat a road call as a data point: record position, cause and cost, and after three months you will know whether your problem is inflation, alignment or a supplier. Third, plan tire replacement into home-time and reset windows instead of letting it happen on the shoulder of I-40 — that scheduling decision alone is the difference between a $600 planned expense and a $1,200 unplanned one.

What to Do This Week

Buy the driver a decent dual-head gauge if there isn’t one in the truck, and ask for one photo of all ten readings on the next reset day. That single data set tells you more about the carrier’s tire program than any conversation will. If the spread across positions is wide, you have an inflation discipline problem and it is costing fuel every mile. If one position is consistently low, you have a leak and you can schedule it instead of getting surprised by it.

Then set a reminder for the same day next month. Tire programs do not fail because nobody knows the checks. They fail because nobody owns the calendar — and in a one-truck or three-truck operation, that owner is usually the dispatcher.
