- Audit your book by exposure, not by revenue. Pull your last 90 days of loads and tag each one: long-haul dry van terminal-to-terminal, or everything else. If more than half your volume is in the first bucket on Sunbelt interstates, that is a concentration risk to start diversifying now — not because a robot takes it next year, but because that is where rate pressure shows up first.
- Move toward the messy freight. Multi-stop, live load, tight windows, temperature-controlled, and construction-driven flatbed all require a human making phone calls. That is your moat, and it is a bigger one than most dispatchers realize.
- Get positioned on the ends. Autonomous middle-mile creates demand for short-haul drayage between transfer hubs and shippers. If a launch terminal opens in a market where you have carriers, that first-and-last-mile work is new freight, not lost freight.
- Watch terminal announcements, not mileage milestones. A press release about driverless miles changes nothing for you. A new transfer terminal on a corridor you run changes your lane map. Track the former as noise and the latter as news.
- Do not buy technology on this timeline. Nothing about these permits requires you to change your TMS, your load boards, or your process this year. Spend that budget on things that pay in the next 12 months.
- Talk to your carriers plainly. Owner-operators read the same headlines and hear “you’re obsolete.” A dispatcher who can explain the actual permit conditions and the actual timeline is a dispatcher who keeps clients through the noise.
The Real Risk Is Concentration, Not Robots
Here is the honest framing. The threat to an independent dispatch service over the next five years is not that a driverless truck takes your load. It is that a slow, steady increase in autonomous capacity on the two or three highest-volume interstate corridors pushes spot rates down on exactly the freight that is easiest to book — and a dispatcher whose whole business is easy-to-book freight has no room to absorb that.
The counter is the same thing that protects you against a rate trough, a fuel spike or a lost client: a book that is diverse by equipment, by lane, and by customer. Every move that makes you less dependent on the single easiest lane on the board also makes you less exposed to automation. You do not need an autonomous strategy. You need the strategy you already needed, with one more reason to execute it.
What to Watch From Here
Three markers tell you the timeline is actually moving. First, a driverless deployment permit in California — not a testing permit with a safety operator, but authorization to run with nobody in the seat. Second, transfer terminals announced in specific metros; that is when lane geography changes for real. Third, the outcome of the Teamsters litigation, which could slow the regulatory pathway regardless of how the technology performs.
